This summer adventure school camp combines the best parts of the Arctic summer as you canoe across a beautiful freshwater lake in Finnish Lapland and hike in pristine Finnish forests. On this camp you will learn some important survival skills such as orienteering, fire making, paddling and wild camping.

Temperature is typically from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. Daylight is around 15-22 hours.

Safety

The adventure is led by a professional guide team that has suitable safety training for all the activities in the program. We have a detailed safety plan and risk assessment for the camp and the activities. Safety training is given before every activity.

Foods & drinks

All food is included. The menu typically consists of typical Finnish foods which are sourced as locally as possible. The food is plentiful and will give you lots of energy. Specific dietary requirements can be accommodated.

Gear for Activities

All the special gear will be provided; however, adventurers will be expected to come prepared for a variety of weather conditions.

Accommodation

Adventure Apes Lodge is located in the countryside of Kuusamo. The rooms are dorm-style with private bathrooms. Bed linen, towels and traditional wood-heated sauna are included. While in wilderness, suitable accommodation such as tents or shelters are provided.

Language

Our adventure are generally available in English or Finnish. Other preferred languages can usually be arranged – ask for other languages.

Discount for school personnel or guardians

Adults (up to 4 person) join the adventure with a discount, but they are requested to participate fully in the program. Adults are also responsible for the night watch and make sure everyone stays in bed between 10pm and 7am.

Summer Adventure Camp

Camp Programme

Check out the summarised version of the camp programme below. In this camp, the participants are allocated into two teams, A & B. The program below is for the Team A. The program for the Team B is the same, but in different order.

Team A will go first to overnight canoeing tour where they will learn how to paddle in twin sharing canoes, cook their meals either on gas cookers or on open fire and camp in twin sharing tents out in the wild. On day 4 the teams will come together and have a cosy games night together at the Lodge. In the morning of day 5 Team A will stay at the Lodge surroundings to learn survival skills and prepare for hiking adventure. In the evening of day 7 everyone will join a farewell dinner party together and share their experiences. 

We will provide a more comprehensive version of the programme with the quote.

Day 1: Arrival and preparations


Arrival and transportation from the Airport to the Adventure Apes Lodge.

Settling in, adventure briefing & dinner at the Lodge.

Day 2: Paddling adventure 1


Morning adventure: Preparing canoes for the paddling.

Afternoon adventure: Transfer to canoe starting point. Packing canoes, paddling begins.

Setting up the camp and cooking dinner outdoors. Evening reflection.

Day 3: Paddling adventure 2


Full day adventure: Canoeing in Finnish Lapland. Breaks along the route.

Arrival to the new campsite, setting up the camp and cooking dinner outdoors. Evening reflection.

Day 4: Paddling adventure 3


Full day adventure: The second full day canoeing in wilderness.

Arriving back to the Adventure Apes Lodge. Gear maintenance.

Dinner, wood heated sauna and evening snacks. Games night with team B.

Day 5: Survival skills


Morning adventure: Orienteering workshop

Afternoon adventure: Fire making challenge. Introduction to Finnish Sauna Culture.

Dinner, wood heated sauna and evening snacks. Finnish language lessons.

Day 6: Day Hike


Full day adventure: A Day Hike and a self-cooked lunch in the wilderness.

Afternoon adventure: Fire making challenge. Introduction to Finnish Sauna Culture.

Dinner, wood heated sauna and evening snacks. Games night.

Day 7: Test your skills.


Morning adventure: Camp Olympics.

Afternoon adventure: Bird house workshop.

Dinner & Farewell party at the evening.

Day 8: Time to Say Goodbye


Breakfast together and farewells.

Professional Guides

The guide team consists of professional guides having experience in all the activities included in the program. Main guide is available 24/7 during the adventure. 

Our guides have experience in guiding children and young people in arctic wilderness and have also participated in Adventure Apes in-house training including safety and adventure education training. They are also first aid certified. In addition there might be trainees who are in the Adventure Apes training program.

Adventurers are requested to follow the guide’s instructions in all circumstances.
