Experience the best of the Arctic summer as you paddle across a beautiful freshwater lake in Finnish Lapland. Canoe by day and camp in remote camping sites by night. Swim under the midnight sun and enjoy the nightless nights in the wild.

50 km (31 miles) of canoeing & 16 km (9.9 miles) of hiking. 6–10 hours of physical activity per day.

Weather Conditions

Temperature is typically from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. Daylight is around 15-22 hours.

Safety

The adventure is led by a professional guide team that has suitable safety training for all the activities in the program. We have a detailed safety plan and risk assessment for the camp and the activities. Safety training is given before every activity.

Professional Guide

The adventure is led by a professional guide team with a dedicated main guide and experienced to work with children. Learn more about our guides from below!

Foods & drinks

All food is included. The menu typically consists of typical Finnish foods which are sourced as locally as possible. The food is plentiful and will give you lots of energy. Specific dietary requirements can be accommodated.

Gear for Activities

All the special gear will be provided; however, adventurers will be expected to come prepared for a variety of weather conditions.

Accommodation

Adventure Apes Lodge is located in the countryside of Kuusamo. The rooms are dorm-style with private bathrooms. Bed linen, towels and traditional wood-heated sauna are included. While in wilderness, suitable accommodation such as tents or shelters are provided.

Language

Our adventure are generally available in English or Finnish. Other preferred languages can usually be arranged – ask for other languages.

Free for school personnel or guardians

Adults (up to 2 person) join the adventure for free, but they are requested to participate fully in the program. Adults are also responsible for the night watch and make sure everyone stays in bed between 10pm and 7am.

Spring–Summer Canoeing Camp

Camp Programme

Day 1: Arrival and preparations


Transportation from Kuusamo or Rovaniemi Airport. Dinner and get-together with guides. Tour briefing and getting known with the gear.

Introduction to Finnish sauna culture and relaxing in a traditional wood heated sauna.

Sleeping in Adventure Apes Lodge.

Day 2: Paddling Adventure Starts


Gear preparation and learning how to, for example, operate a gas operated cooker and set up a tent.

Transportation to the canoeing starting point. Practicing rescueing yourself from a capsized canoe. Packing up canoes.

First paddling route of 10 km (6.2 miles). Arrival to the lean-to shelter campsite. Evening campfire and possbility for midnight sun swimming. Sleeping in tents.

Day 3: Paddling towards East


Paddling through an open water to arrive to the sandy beaches for lunch, and to continue after to the second campsite (14 km / 8.6 miles).

Camping and outdoor dinner at the campsite. Stretching with guides. Possible to see wildlife.

Sleeping in tents.

Day 4: Enjoying the Silence of Nature


Paddling in a wilderness pond at relaxed speed. Lunch at the campsite along the way. Paddling distance of the route 11 km / 6.8 miles.

Building a camp to the evening campsite. Cooking dinner with pancakes at the campfire. Feedback session with expedition team and guides.

Team building games session. Sleeping in tents.

Day 5: Day Hike Around the Lake


16 kilometres day hike by foot, around a beautiful wilderness lake. Crossing the lake with a rowboat.

Swimming possibility at the sandy beach. Possibility to spot reindeer.

Dinner at the campsite, feedback session and accommodation in tents.

Day 6: Last stretch of paddling, Summer Olympics and Sauna


Longest day of canoeing (15 km / 9.3 miles). Lunch on route.

Return to the starting point. Packing gear and transportation to the Adventure Apes Lodge. Gear maintenance.

Time to boost team building skills in the Summer Olympics. Prepare for lots of laughs! Day ends with a relaxing sauna and a a farewell dinner together.

Day 7: Time to Say Goodbye


We like to say a great adventure never ends, it merely changes form to become part of who you are.

After breakfast transportation to the Kuusamo or Rovaniemi Airport.

Professional Guides

The guide team consists of professional guides having experience in all the activities included in the program. Main guide is available 24/7 during the adventure. 

Our guides have experience in guiding children and young people in arctic wilderness and have also participated in Adventure Apes in-house training including safety and adventure education training. They are also first aid certified. In addition there might be trainees who are in the Adventure Apes training program.

Adventurers are requested to follow the guide’s instructions in all circumstances.
