Wilderness Hiking Adventure

Fully guided hiking adventure in Riisitunturi & Oulanka National Park's trails.

Reasonably Challenging Adventure

22-24 km (13,6-15 miles) of hiking. 7–9 hours of physical activity per day.

Weather Conditions

Temperature is typically from 7 to -5 degrees Celsius. Sunlight is around 3–6 hours. Possibility for snowing.

All Meals & Drinks Included

Local, tasty, healthy and plentiful meals are enjoyed at our accommodation or in wilderness.

All Adventure Gear Included

All hiking and special activity related gear included to match the arctic summer conditions.

Transportation Included

All the necessary transportation is included from the Kuusamo Airport and back.

Safety

The adventure is led by a professional guide team that has suitable safety training for all the activities in the program. We have a detailed safety plan and risk assessment for the camp and the activities. Safety training is given before every activity.

Professional Guide

The adventure is led by a professional guide team with a dedicated main guide and experienced to work with children. Learn more about our guides from below!

Foods & drinks

All food is included. The menu typically consists of typical Finnish foods which are sourced as locally as possible. The food is plentiful and will give you lots of energy. Specific dietary requirements can be accommodated.

Gear for Activities

All the special gear will be provided; however, adventurers will be expected to come prepared for a variety of weather conditions.

Accommodation

Adventure Apes Lodge is located in the countryside of Kuusamo. The rooms are dorm-style with private bathrooms. Bed linen, towels and traditional wood-heated sauna are included. While in wilderness, suitable accommodation such as tents or shelters are provided.

Language

Our adventure are generally available in English or Finnish. Other preferred languages can usually be arranged – ask for other languages.

Free for school personnel or guardians

Adults (up to 3 person) join the adventure for free, but they are requested to participate fully in the program. Adults are also responsible for the night watch and make sure everyone stays in bed between 10pm and 7am.

Camp Programme

Check out the summarised version of the camp programme below. We will provide a more comprehensive version of the programme with the quote.

Day 1: Arrival


Transportation from Kuusamo Airport. Dinner and get-together with guides. Tour briefing and getting known with the gear.

Introduction to Finnish sauna culture and in a traditional wood heated sauna.

Day 2: Preparations for Day Hike


Preparations for a day hike. An orienteering exercise in surroundings. Learning how to maker fire, how to use gas cooker and cook lunch outdoors.

Packing backpacks and preparing meals for the next day hike. Guided safety plan walkthrough. Evening sauna.

Day 3: Day Hike at Riisitunturi


Transport to the Riisitunturi National Park. Introduction to the coming hike.

Navigating and leading hiking teams through forests and fjells in turns. Cooking lunch and snacks outdoors.

Returning to the starting point in the dark. Bus back to the Adventure Apes Lodge. Evening sauna.

Day 4: Independent Hike Preparation


Student team plans a route, plans and responsibilities for upcoming hike.

Fun and games in Adventure Apes Lodge's sports hall.

Voluntarily night-time orienteering exercise in darkness.

Day 5: Independent Hike Preparation


Bus transfer to Oulanka National Park. Preparing the teams for the hike.

Hiking through the Small Bear Trail, the most popular hiking route in Finland: hiking, meals & tasks. Leading the team in turns.

Bus transfer back to the Adventure Apes Lodge. Self-reflection, sauna & dinner party.

Day 6: Time to say Goodbye


Even the greatest adventures come to an end, but Finnish Lapland has changed a little bit of everyone on the adventure and leaves a lifelong memory.

Transportation to the Kuusamo Airport.

Professional Guides

The guide team consists of professional guides having experience in all the activities included in the program. Main guide is available 24/7 during the adventure. 

Our guides have experience in guiding children and young people in arctic wilderness and have also participated in Adventure Apes in-house training including safety and adventure education training. They are also first aid certified. In addition there might be trainees who are in the Adventure Apes training program.

Adventurers are requested to follow the guide’s instructions in all circumstances.
